The town is surrounded by the southern Rockies known as the San Juan Mountains. One interesting historical trivia is that Butch Cassidy robbed his first bank, the San Miguel Valley Bank, at Telluride in 1889. It sure must be great to live in a place like Telluride, a hiker's paradise, with a number of established trails just departing from the outskirts of town. The famed Jud Wiebe Trail - highly recommended by my Lonely Planet Colorado - is such a trail. It's a relatively short loop of 3.1 miles, but it has a steep ascent and then descent.Bridal Veil Falls, at 365 feet, is the highest waterfall in Colorado. It's easy to visit, just outside Telluride. The trailhead parking is just east of Telluride at the end of Colorado Avenue. If you have a high clearance 4WD, you drive all the way, but we just hiked up the road.
