I'm not sure when or how long it lasted, but that may have been one reason the east entrance was closed. They also closed it when they felt the traffic in the park was too heavy during the memorial day weekend.

That brings you in to Zion through the iconic east entrance and allows you to enjoy the scenery/viewpoints on the east side of the park.
